MSP praises work of devoted parents

Aug 19 2011 by Lorraine Howard, Irvine Herald

THE work of a group of devoted parents has been praised at the Scottish Parliament.

Earlier this year a group of parents formed The Butterfly Club to provide a summer school for their children who were disabled or had additional support needs. And in just over three months they raised an impressive £26,000.

And last week, in a motion to the Scottish Parliament, Margaret Burgess congratulated the parents of James McFarlane and Haysholm schools on their efforts.  The Parliament heard: “The Scottish Parliament motion commends the devotion of the parents who formed the Butterfly Club, praises their efforts and dedication in raising the money to ensure that the children did not miss out, and wishes them every success in reaching their target of £65,000 to run a six-week summer club next year.  “I am delighted for the parents and congratulate them on their success in staging this year’s summer club.  “I wish them well in meeting their target of running the summer school next year.”

A GROUP of devoted parents who raised £26,000 to run a summer club for their disabled children knew every penny was worth it when they saw the looks on the children’s faces.

For the last two weeks the children have been enjoying a host of fun activities at James McFarlane School.  And it is all down to the work of the determined parents.

Donation sets hearts a flutter

August 2011

Kind hearted company James Frew has donated to local charity The Butterfly Club.
The building services has donated £1911 to the North Ayrshire organisation as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations.
"My daughter is a member of the club and she has thoroughly enjoyed being able to go on day trips and socialise with friends from school over the summer.
"As many of the children and young people have severe and complex needs the club has also provided much need routine whilst the schools are closed for summer. The Butterfly Club is an extremely worthwhile cause and seeing the joy on the children's faces has touched us as parents as well as the carers and volunteers."
Sandy Clare, Director of James Frew, said: "We really pleased to have this opportunity to help The Butterfly Club add to their holiday club fund. The club provides a vital service for parents and ensures that the children get the most out of their summer holidays."

Community raises £20k for disabled kids clubMay 27 2011 by Lorraine Howard, Irvine Herald

DEVOTED parents who want to run a summer club for their disabled children have raised an amazing £20,000 to make it a reality.

The parents, including Michelle Burns of Castlepark, formed the Butterfly Club after North Ayrshire Council axed their out-of-school care.  The children, including Michelle’s daughter Ayleigh, six, were devastated when the council pulled the plug on their club.

So they formed a committee and set about raising £25,000 to allow them to run a summer club.

THE mother of an Ardrossan primary school pupil who has profound special educational needs is campaigning to re-establish a summer club which was cut recently.

Elaine McTaggart's son Grant (6) started attending James McFarlane Primary School back in February and when she discovered that a summer club previously available to the pupils had been stooped due to council funding cuts, Elaine joined a group of parents who were determined to re-form their own club. For Grant and other children with severe and complex learning difficulties, the summer club provides much-needed structured support and also gives their parents some well-earned respite.

Published 19 Apr 2011 09:30

SEVEN supermums are fighting to provide out-of-school care for their kids with learning difficulties - after the council pulled the funding from the service last year.

But resilient Irvine mum Michelle Burns, fom Castlepark, and the others are raising cash themselves to provide the holiday clubs which the youngsters so desperately need.

She said: "Our kids can't go to ordinary youth clubs and socilize - and that's where they learn about interacting with others."
